Elmwood Endures: History of a Detroit Cemetery (Great Lakes Books)
Published in Hardcover by Wayne State Univ Pr (July, 1996)
Average review score:

Amazing!Excellent book, telling of a wealth of Detroit history that has seemingly been forgotten. A must have for anybody interested in Michigan history.
Fascinating and quick readI loved the book. I lived in Detroit most of my life and wasn't aware of the history of Elmwood and the characters buried there. The pictures were wonderful! I do wish a complete list of all the graves were included in the book. Since family genealogy is so popular right now it would of been a real asset.

Emergences and Spinner Falls
Published in Paperback by New Issues Pr Poetry Series (17 September, 2002)

A Wonderful Collection of PoemsThis poet clearly experiences the natural world as a vital part of life. The reader shares his experience through the power and beauty of his imagery. He also has a gift for finding and expressing the poetry in life's everyday events. This may involve the humor in the first confession of a young Catholic boy, the joy in taking a shower in winter, or an exquisitely expressed pathos for young children caught in the throes of shame. I return to the poems often, and each time find something new to appreciate.

Empowering Teens: A Guide to Developing a Community-Based Youth Organization
Published in Paperback by C.R.O.Y.A. (Committee Representing Our Young (October, 2000)
Average review score:

Honest, Positive, UpliftingIt's so rare to find an organization that is not only unafraid to let teens be teens, but puts them in charge. Croya does it and does it well. This book gives a solid look into the Croya organization: past, present and future. I'd long held the theory that if given the opportunity young people can do amazing things - Croya proves it. Well worth the read for anyone who has kids or works with them.
Provides insight and guidanceEmpowering Teens: A Guide To Developing A Community Based Youth Organization provides insight and guidance to anyone wishing to improve the quality of life for their community adolescents, whether in an inner city setting, a suburban area, or a rural region. Elaine Slayton presents a cogent analysis of program methodology, detailing how it works. Very highly recommended and essential "how to" reading for youth workers, parents, educators, counselors, governmental policy makers, community organization leaders, parks and recreation supervisors, and concerned adolescents, Empowering Teens provides a blueprint for enacting workable and effective changes in any community of any size or demographic makeup in order to improve the lives, safety, and general well-being of American youth.

Eye on the Sea
Published in Hardcover by Breakaway Books (15 April, 1999)
Average review score:

book has won an awardBoating Writers International announces that Mary Jane Haye, author of "Eye on the Sea: Reflections on the Boating Life" (Breakaway Books) has been awarded First Prize in their contest for the best book on recreational boating published in the years 1998 and 1999. One judge said of the book: With "Eye on the Sea" author Mary Jane Hayes focuses on the boating life with the microscope of the soul. The book acknowledges the disappointments. It faces down its retributions. Then, credibly and in superb prose, it testifies by personal example to the blessings that boating gives its people." Boating Writers International is made up of writers, photographers and broadcasters who work in the marine industry representing media from local and national newspapers, regional and international magazines and radio and television. The award was announced at the Miami International Boat Show on February 18th and carries with it a cash prize.
What a great sea lovers read!Once you start reading this book, you can't put it down. It's lyrically beautiful writing, full of images that delight the soul. You actually are aboard her vessel with Hayes and her husband, experiencing everything they do. And it's not all pleasant, as she relates in her chapter, "On an August Gale." You, too, see those monstrous waves and wild winds, not to mention the green/black sky. But I particularly liked her chapter on salty dogs. Anyone who has seen these canines with ears flapping in the wind will laugh. This is a great gift book, and not just for boaters.

This book is indespensible for a Beartooth-Absaroka hiker!Sometimes the hardest part of getting to Beartooth-Absaroka lakes is finding the trailhead. Great detail is given by Pat Marcuson in traveling this incredible area. After 50/60 trips into this wilderness I wouldn't be without this book! I met Pat several times in the late seventies and his knowledge of this area is quite remarkable and reflected in this book.
Absolutely as advertised-incredible detailI've been there and the few lakes I've experienced we're exactly as described in the book. You can't value the information here! Great job.

FRESH: a wonderful cookbook! After hearing from friends how wonderful the food is at the Lake Austin Spa Resort, I wanted to find out what all the fuss is about. I haven't made it to the spa yet to sample the food but I did the next best thing, I bought their new cookbook FRESH.
The book not only offers great tasting healthy recipes but ideas on gardening, home spa, cooking tips and much more. I think that is what makes it a great gift because it's more than just a standard cookbook. I've made a few of the recipes and I'm amazed that these recipes are low fat but taste wonderful. Everything is covered from soups, salads, meats, chicken, vegetarian, seafood with cuisines from all over the world.
A great gift for anyone that loves to cook or enjoy good food!
